The rooms at the MAO form a pathway in the history of the world through its art. The works are tokens of places, facts, and inhabitants: their physical presence does not constitute a limit to the imagination, does not bind our view to an aesthetic scheme, instead it allows suggestions which go beyond representation and lets the viewers go elsewhere. Precisely that, have I always asked of music – an ability to move beyond the reality, which permits a feedback within the spirit, rather than confirming what can be seen. I think about the times when, as a child, I would observe the globe for hours, reading time and again the names of cities, countries, islands, continents, imagining how they could really be.
Of all the arts, music is the one with the more marked ability of making visible what dwells within or behind the images, our mental images included. At the
cinema, often music makes the images more alive. I have learned to call a “film” such, when that very combination – more or less successful - between sound/music and images happens.
The score I wrote and created for the MAO is an attempt to put in a relationship the space of the museum which houses the works with the inside space of the works themselves, in the hope that these places, at the passage of viewers, match to make an encounter. In the sound is the echo of what has been or could have been. In this journey towards the inside, the possibility (one of the possibilities) of establishing an emotional relationship with the exhibited objects of the museum exists.
The observation must to take place from here, today. Now, in this place, we observe the past. We listen to it.
